Måske kan et eksempel hjælpe. Dette er standard i Debian.

set viminfo='20,\"50	" read/write a .viminfo file, don't store more than
			" 50 lines of registers

Der er flere forkellige informationer der kan gemmes i viminfo
(') hvor mange filer der gemmes "marks" for
(\") hvor mange linier der gemmes i hvert register 
(f) gemme global marks (f0 nej)
(r) removable media, eks. /floppy (der gemmes ikke her på)
(:) antal linier der skal gemmes
(/) antal søgninger der skal gemmes
(h) fjerner highlight af sidste søgning (sv.t :nohls)
(@) antal emner i input-line history
(%) gemmer og genskaber buffer history
(!) gemmer og genskaber globale variable
(n) navn på viminfo fil, skal være sidst hvis den er med

set viminfo='100,\"50,:100,/100,%
