Det er UTF-8 der vises som ISO-8859-1. UTF-8 er multi-byte chrset,
og første byte har den høje bit sat, så ved man der er én til byte.
Hvis der er endnu flere bytes bliver det mere kompliceret.

Du se enhver UTF-8 textfil med "æ" gengivet som "Ã," på en RedHat 5.2
fx (RH-5.2 var helt uden UTF-8). Du kan se mere om hvad utf-8 er

Hvad laver det så? 

Jeg glemmer aldrig Jacob Sparres udbrud da han opdagede, hvor
fejl-givende UTF-8 er i systemsammenhæng.

Kommandolinie miljøet og derunder filnavne burde ikke indeholde andet
end bytes (sådan som Unix filnavne, der må indeholde alle byte-values
undtagen "/") således at man ikke konverterer filnavne når man fx.
viser filnavnet "blåbærgrød.txt" fra Apple-OSX på en BSD. Måske gør man
heller ikke dette?)

I system-miljøer ville jeg foretrække at "æ" blev kodet med ascii navne
for ISO-entities, d.v.s. &aelig;
