Problemet er nok at Thunderbird (eller X) skal sættes til at bruge det
samme skriftsnit til begge tegnkodninger.

Jeg formoder at det du mangler er en afbildning fra UTF-8 til det
skriftsnit du bruger, til at vise ISO-8859-1-kodet tekst.  Desværre
ved jeg ikke lige hvordan man sætter sådan en afbildning sammen.
