"man bc" og "man dc" vil nok give dig en del af svaret.

bc er en scriptstyret regnemaskine (som også kan tage input fra stdin
selvfølgelig), som kan regne med arbitrær præcision. Antallet af cifre i
tallet er frit op til hukommelsesstørrelsen. bc er som standard et
heltals-regneprogram, men med en kommando kan man (i UNIX SYS V) sætte op
til 100 cifre efter kommaet. Jeg er ikke umiddelbart klar over om Linux
implementationen kan regne med større præcision.

dc er et RPN (á la HP's lommeregnere) interface til bc, og kan som sådan
regne med samme antal cifre/præcision.

Hvis det ellers er implementeret, så findes der også et program, factor, som
kan opløse et tal i primtalsfaktorer. Hvis Linux ikke har implementeret den
anderledes end SYS V, så kan den beregne på tal på op omkring 15 cifre.
